The Advantages of Installing a ‘Green Roof’

Reducing our carbon footprint and creating a pleasant environment.

When it was time to replace our flat roof on the extension we looked into the various options. We decide on a green roof, not very much more expensive than a normal replacement roof and with a projected lifespan of considerably longer than standard bitumen based roofs.  We are delighted with it.

We had a lightweight system installed.  It took only 1 day to install and required only minimal maintainence (watering) during the intial bedding in of the sedum.

One bonusof installing this type of roof was that the green roof has a cooling effect in the summer.  The extra thickness of the roof and the transpiration of the plants helped keep our livingroom  considerbaly cooler then in previous summers.  It has also provided additional insulation in the winter helping reduce our heating bills!

Advantages of a green roof:

  • Extends the roof life, the underlying materials are protected.
  • 1m2 of green roof can absorb the same quantity of CO2 as regular car would emit during a 50mile drive.
  • In one year a 1m2 can absorb 5kg of CO2
  • Provides good sound insulation.
  • Looks better than a flat roof.
  • Can provide a natural habitat for various species and attract bees and birds.
  • Insulates the building, making the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
  • The plants can capture airborne particles such as smog, heavy metals and volatile organic compounds from the atmosphere and improve air quality.

You must ask your builder if the flat roof can take the weight of the installation of a green roof.
